Skin Cancer Awareness: What to Watch For

If you work or play outdoors in western Nebraska, sun protection and early detection are worth a few minutes of attention.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and people who spend long days outdoors, including farmers, ranchers, coaches, golfers, face extra exposure at our altitude.

Check your spots with the ABCDEs

  • Asymmetry, one half doesn't match the other
  • Border, edges are ragged or blurred
  • Color, several shades of brown, black, red or blue
  • Diameter, larger than a pencil eraser
  • Evolving, any change in size, shape, color or symptoms

Protect your skin

Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and reapply every two hours, wear a wide-brimmed hat and long sleeves, and seek shade during midday hours.
