Back-to-School Health: A Parent's Checklist

Meals, water bottles, handwashing and checkups — simple habits for a healthier school year.

The first day of school always sneaks up. A little planning now pays off all year.

Build better meals

  • Breakfast: protein plus fiber — eggs and toast, yogurt and fruit, or oatmeal with peanut butter.
  • Lunch: let kids help pack it; they're more likely to eat what they chose.
  • Dinner: aim for half the plate as fruits and vegetables.
  • Snacks: keep treats as treats, and stock easy grab-and-go options.

Keep water close

A refillable bottle in every backpack helps with focus and energy — especially during hot early-season practices.

Stop germs before they spread

Practice 20-second handwashing at home, teach kids to cough into an elbow, and keep them home when they have a fever.

Schedule checkups early

Sports physicals, well-child visits and vaccines fill up fast in August. Book with the SRMC Physicians Clinic now, and remember the Walk-In Clinic for the sniffles that inevitably follow.
