Accessibility

The site should adapt to you, not the other way round.

Switch on the options that make this site easier to read and use. They save on this device and apply the moment you choose them.

Your options

Four things you can change right now

Nothing here replaces your phone or computer's own accessibility settings. These add to them, and work even if you have never touched those settings.

  • Larger text

Two steps up, applied to the whole site, from headings and menus to forms and the chat assistant. Your own device or browser zoom keeps working on top of it.

  • High contrast

Darker text, stronger borders and a brighter page background, so labels and buttons stay readable in bright light or on a tired screen.

  • Reduce motion

Turns off fading, sliding and the photo parallax that makes pictures drift as you scroll. Content simply appears.

  • Underline links

Every link gets a permanent underline, so you never have to guess whether a word is clickable.

The same menu is in the header of every page. Look for the accessibility icon.

Built in from the start

What is already handled

This site was rebuilt with accessibility as a requirement, not a coat of paint at the end.

  • Everything works by keyboardTab through menus, forms and the care-finder in a sensible order. A Skip to content link is the first thing you meet on every page, and focused items always show a visible ring.
  • Reads well with a screen readerEach page has one clear heading, sections are labelled, and icon-only buttons carry names. Photo galleries and the events calendar announce themselves rather than sounding like a wall of unlabelled boxes.
  • Videos never play on their ownEvery film waits for you to press play, starts with sound on, and says what it is about before you click. Nothing moves or makes noise unexpectedly.
  • Colour and contrast checkedText and buttons meet AA contrast against their backgrounds across the site, and we re-check every page we add. The high-contrast option above goes further still.

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at level AA, the standard courts and auditors use for the ADA. A site is never finished, so we keep testing as we add pages.

Need it another way?

Tell us what would help and we will find a way

Printed copies in large print, help over the phone, an interpreter, someone to walk you through a form. Call the main line and say what you need. You do not have to explain why.

Found something that gets in your way?

A page you cannot read, a button you cannot reach, a form that will not submit? Please tell us. We fix accessibility reports ahead of most other requests.
